Tramping

New Zealand is the perfect place to go tramping - there are tracks suitable for relative beginners, while more experienced trampers can always find something a little more challenging. Many, including the Great Walks, are well-maintained and relatively easy to access. The Nelson region is particularly spoilt, as it has three national parks: the Abel Tasman, the Kahurangi and the Nelson Lakes national parks, each of which offers a myriad of tramping options.

However, although New Zealand is a country of trampers, it is important to be well-prepared. The weather can change dramatically in minutes and temperatures at summits can differ greatly from the valleys. At Rollo’s Outdoor Centre, we stock a wide range of equipment, clothing and gear to make your tramp a safe one. We also hire some equipment, so you can still be prepared, even if you are on a short holiday in the region.

Our gear includes:

  • Backpacks - day packs and larger tramping packs, bladders
  • Sleeping bags
  • Clothing - specialised clothing designed for tramping and extreme conditions, thermals, adventure racing wear, softshell (lightweight, wind and waterproof material), socks
  • Shoes - a variety of walking shoes and boots and Holey Soles (comfortable lightweight shoes perfect for in the water or at the campsite)
  • Food - light, freeze dried food, meat or veggie options
  • Utensils - cookers, pans, plates and cutlery
  • Maps
  • Safety equipment - survival blankets, survival bags

Tramps

The Abel Tasman National Park boasts numerous options for day walks up to longer tramps of several days. The coastal track is one of New Zealand’s Great Walks and is suitable for people with general fitness.

It is around 50k long in its entirety and takes between three and five days to complete. The track takes in a stunning range of bush and beach vistas.

Access is by water taxi (you can walk just a small section if you wish), or you can walk in at either end. For more information, click here.
